Sonalika, India’s largest tractor exporter, is investing ₹1,000 crore to produce electric tractors and quadricycles. This initiative aims to modernize the agricultural machinery industry, which has long relied on diesel.
Electric tractors will be the new focus of Sonalika and save money in the hands of farmers plus reduce pollution. Fuel costs will be significantly lower, so they will be a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel tractors. Sonalika Group's Joint Managing Director Raman Mittal said, "Within farm equipment, we want to move towards electrification and keep building on it. It does not matter if it is a five-year story or a ten-year story.". We are committed to it."
These electric tractors would be launched in the next two years. International markets will be targeted for the initial sales of these vehicles by Sonalika. Moreover, the company is working on electric quadricycles to be used for eco-friendly transportation in urban areas.
Switching from diesel to electric tractors for farmers in India is more than reducing pollution; it will also save them money and raise productivity. One significant advantage of electric tractors is the instant torque provided by electric engines, which diesel tractors cannot match. Raman Mittal noted, “An electric vehicle is perfect for tractors,” highlighting that electric technology delivers strong power from the start. He added that Sonalika is in the "advanced stages" of developing these electric tractors.
Sonalika's plans extend beyond agriculture, as the company aims to enter the electric quadricycle market, offering a sustainable transportation option for cities. This marks a significant shift for Sonalika, expanding its business from farming to urban mobility.
Today Sonalika has a market share of 13.5% of tractors in India and exports to over 140 countries. Its units in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, continue their work on modern machinery for the production of electric vehicles (EVs). The unit also manufactures parts and offers full service to existing clients. These facilities also manufacture parts and provide full service to existing clients.
With these efforts, Sonalika aims to lead the way in sustainable farming and transportation, offering long-term benefits for both farmers and urban users.
