Swaraj Tractor Journey from Inception to Complete Driving Objectives

Swaraj Tractor is the second-largest tractor brand in the country. It enjoys customer engagement and very high brand recognition, which is accurately captured in the slogan "Mera Swaraj". The Swaraj brand comes with roots in the Green Revolution of 1960.

Establishment 

The Punjab Government set up the Punjab Tractor Limited (PTL) in the 1970s after acquiring Swaraj tractor's company from Central Technical Engineering Research Institute. In further detail, an independent valuation exercise has been conducted jointly by N. M. Raiji & Company and Ernst & Young.  

Swaraj brand was established in 1974 with a mission to develop India's first Indigenous tractor. It is a fast-growing company that comes with a wide range of tractor and farm machinery and stands amongst the tractor brands in India. For various agricultural requirements, it consists of 4wd tractors for specialised wetlands. Swaraj’s combine harvesters and specialised farm implements, such as potato planters, are in high demand as these facilitate the cultivation processes and enable increasing the yield. Swaraj has been appreciable among farmers for its low maintenance cost, reliability, strength, high performance in extreme conditions, high resale value and long life. 

Commercial Production

In the same year, foremost commercial production started with the 2 models, such as Swaraj 724 FE and Swaraj 735 FE. These 2 tractor models have various features such as large fuel tank capacity, matchless power and superior performance. These first inception tractors are manufactured with a host of features such as the Highest PTO power in the segment, Dual PTO, 4WD axle for better stability &, power steering, pulling power, and side shift gearbox with a wide platform for operator safety & comfort etc. 

First Combine Harvester 

Swaraj 8100 is India's first self-propelled combine harvester, launched in 1980. This harvester comes with various features such as less vibration for operating comfortably. Due to the sieve area and more straw walkers, it comes with minimum grain. Apart from this, Swaraj 8100 combine harvester comes with more fuel-efficient and more ground clearance and less turning radius. In addition, it has the provision of 2 blower speeds that provides better cleaning adjustment.    

50 HP Utility Tractor 

Swaraj 855 is a 50 HP tractor launched in 1983 and has a 3-cylinder water-cooled engine. A tractor designed to deliver pure power is designed for tough field operations & hard soil operations. It is equipped with various features such as multi-speed forward & reverse PTO, direction control valve, dual-clutch, power steering, etc.

2nd Manufacturing plant Establishment 

In 1995, Established the 2nd plant for manufacturing Swaraj tractors in Chhaparchhedi. 

Launched the Swaraj 744

The 48 HP Swaraj 744 tractor was launched in 1999. Swaraj 744 is manufactured with a reverse PTO and multi-speed forward, which makes it highly fuel-efficient on PTO has driven applications such as alternator reaper and thresher. In addition, this tractor comes with quality features like dual-clutch, power steering, adjustable front-axle and DCV. Overall, Swaraj 744 is a powerful all-rounder and an excellent performer tractor.

Total sales till 2002 

Cumulative sales of Swaraj tractors around 5,00,000 till 2002 because this company produces advanced technology tractors. Swaraj isn't just a tractor for every Indian farmer; it's a core part of their families. 

Launched Small and Heavy-duty tractor in 2007 

In 2007, the company launched the Swaraj 724 FE Orchard and Swaraj 978 tractor. These tractors provide the best efficiency in the field. Swaraj 724 FE comes with a 25 HP power tractor. In addition, its outer to outer width has been limited to 1120 mm, which makes it suitable for inter-cultivation and orchard operations. At the same time, the 75 HP Swaraj 978 tractor is loaded with high-quality technology with the best features that make this tractor highly demandable in the market.  

Acquiring By Mahindra 

Mahindra & Mahindra agreed to acquire a 43.3% stake in Punjab tractors limited in 2007. Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd is the 4th largest tractor manufacturer globally. It became the domestic leader for 23 consecutive years, announcing it signed a deal to acquire a 43.3% stake in Punjab Tractors Ltd at a Rs 360 per share. 

Transformed the PTL 

Following this acquisition, the former PTL was merged with M&M and transformed into the Swaraj Division of Mahindra & Mahindra in 2009. Starting with the 735XM and 843XM in 2009, Swaraj Division standardised the XM range of products. As a result, the company achieved a top rating in the Customer Satisfaction Index and Sales.

First Production of XM series 

Swaraj launched the 735 XM series of models in 2009 that is the most suitable for applications such as rotavators, cultivators & threshers. It has various features such as power steering, oil-immersed brakes, a single-piece top hood, and bigger rear tyres that provide comfortable driving. Thereafter, Swaraj launched the 843XM, which is also based on the XM series. This tractor is suitable for puddling operations, implements like rotavator, cultivator, haulage, and other farming operations.

Rich History of Swaraj 

It got the highest rating in leadership for CSI (Customer Satisfaction Index) and Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) & CaPS in 2011. Apart from this, Swaraj Division achieved Stage-5 in MQW Assessment.

Launched the Product Portfolio

In 2012, Swaraj launched the product portfolio of 825XM, 841XM, 744 XM, 855XM with XM series. With this most reliable tractor series, this swaraj felicitate in the world. It also became the second tractor company all over the world to win the prestigious DEMING Prize.   

Swaraj’s Honourable Achievement  

Swaraj got the TPM Excellence Award from JIPM for Plant 1 and Plant 2. The plant had a total of 238 machines in 2013. This award was awarded for improving the machine. Within 2018, cumulative sales of swaraj tractors crossed 1500000. 

With all these efforts and the growing tractor industry, Swaraj Tractors reached its previous position as the second-largest tractor brand in the country. Today, more than 100,000 Swaraj tractors are sold in India every year, and its presence is increasing in neighbouring countries and some markets in Africa.
