VST Tillers Tractors Ltd. and Union Bank of India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Bengaluru to make retail financing more accessible for farmers purchasing tractors and other agricultural equipment. The partnership is aimed at helping farmers get easier access to credit for farm mechanisation.
Under the agreement, Union Bank will provide retail loan facilities to customers purchasing VST’s agricultural equipment. The financing will cover tractors, power tillers, power reapers and power weeders. The facility will be available through VST Tillers Tractors’ network of more than 1,000 dealers across India, allowing farmers to access financing closer to their local communities.
Retail Finance for Farm Equipment Still Low in Karnataka
Retail finance for small farm machines (SFM) is still a relatively new concept among small and marginal farmers in Karnataka. Many farmers in the state continue to depend heavily on government subsidies when purchasing agricultural machinery.
At present, retail finance penetration in Karnataka's tractor market is around 10%, while farm mechanisation in the state is about 30%. Karnataka has a tractor market of approximately 56,000 to 60,000 units per year, while the tiller market is around 5,000 units annually.
These figures highlight the scope for increasing access to formal financing for agricultural machinery. The VST and Union Bank partnership could help address this gap by giving farmers another financing option when purchasing farm equipment.
With the new arrangement, farmers looking to purchase VST tractors, power tillers, power reapers or power weeders can access retail finance through the company's extensive dealer network.
The availability of financing at the dealer level can make the equipment-buying process more convenient, particularly for farmers who may find it difficult to arrange the full purchase amount upfront.
Union Bank already offers financing under its farm mechanisation schemes for equipment such as tractors and power tillers, supporting farmers in purchasing agricultural machinery.
Dr HT Vasappa, General Manager, Union Bank of India, said the partnership would help improve farmers' access to credit for agricultural mechanisation.
"Through this collaboration, we aim to strengthen access to credit and enable farmers to acquire modern farm equipment through VST's wide dealer network," he said.
The partnership comes at a time when access to affordable finance remains an important factor in the adoption of farm machinery, particularly among small and marginal farmers.
VST Tillers Tractors CEO Antony Cherukara said affordable financing is an important enabler of farm mechanisation. He added that the partnership with Union Bank would make it easier for farmers to finance VST tractors and other farm equipment.
The company said the initiative is expected to support farmers in adopting modern mechanisation solutions while managing their investment through accessible financing options.
The VST-Union Bank agreement could make a difference for farmers who want to purchase agricultural machinery but face financial limitations. Instead of arranging the entire equipment cost upfront, eligible customers can explore retail financing through the partnership.
For Karnataka in particular, where farm mechanisation is around 30% and retail finance penetration in the tractor market is only about 10%, improving access to equipment loans could support greater adoption of tractors and small farm machines.
VST's more than 1,000-dealer network also gives the partnership a wider reach, bringing financing options closer to farmers in different regions of the country.
