Power Tiller: Uses, Features, Crops & Specifications

The sections of the guide cover why farmers buy a power tiller, which crops it suits and where it is most common. Also, the four models with specifications, then price, subsidy and a conclusive suggestion for picking the right size.

Why Is a Power Tiller Used?

  • Small and medium fields of 1 to 5 acres, where a tractor cannot enter
  • Ploughing, puddling, weeding, inter-cultivation and bed making
  • Lower purchase cost, less diesel and lower maintenance than a tractor
  • Hilly land and terrace farming

Kubota Power Tiller: PEM140DI

The Kubota PEM140DI is a 13 HP diesel tiller with the widest tilling width at 800 mm. The 6 F + 2 R gears give a good spread of working speeds. Also, the 11 litre fuel tank cuts down refuelling stops on a long puddling day. At Rs 2.20 lakh, it is also the costliest of the four. The wider cut means fewer passes across a field than the other power tillers, which saves time on bigger plots.

Power Tiller Subsidy in India

A power tiller under SMAM scheme (Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization) gets 50% assistance for SC and ST farmers, small and marginal farmers and women, and 40% for other farmers.
Each category has a fixed rupee ceiling that changes with the HP class and the state. Applications go through the state agriculture department's online DBT portal, and the district agriculture office can give the exact ceiling. Subsidy rules differ between states, so it is worth checking if approval is needed before the purchase, not after.

Which Power Tiller Suits Which Farm?

  • Very small plots, vegetable beds and polyhouses: Honda FJ500.
  • A power tiller for small farms of 1 to 5 acres with paddy or mixed crops: a 12 to 13 HP diesel model, with the KMW Mega T 12 for the lowest price and the Kubota PEM140DI for the widest cut.
  • For narrow terraces and hill plots: the 600 mm VST 135 DI Ultra.

Names of the States that Use Power Tillers the Most:

  • Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh
  • West Bengal, Odisha, Assam and the North-East
  • Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh
  • Small farmers in Maharashtra and Gujarat

Conclusion

No single brand wins on every field size. Honda covers the smallest plots, KMW Kirloskar keeps the diesel price lowest, VST Shakti offers the most size choices. Moreover, Kubota gives the widest tilling width. Start with your land size, crop, and budget to narrow down the options then test it on both wet and dry ground to make your final choice.
