The rollout of TREM V has itself become a talking point. As per The Hindu article, draft notification from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposes moving tractors above 75 HP and below 25 HP to TREM V from October 1, 2026.

While the 25–50 HP category (which most small and marginal farmers buy) gets a longer runway, moving to an intermediate TREM IIIAA stage in 2028 before reaching full TREM V by 2032. Farmer groups and manufacturers' bodies have pushed back on the timeline, arguing it could raise costs for smaller landholders. So, the final schedule may still see changes before it is locked in.

Why Do We Need Emission Norms?

Farm mechanisation has grown fast in India, and that is a good thing for productivity. But it also means more diesel engines running across rural India every single day. Without any check on this, pollution from farm machinery would keep climbing. TREM norms exist to make sure that growth in mechanisation does not come at the cost of air quality.

Countries such as the United States and those in the European Union adopted strict off-road emission rules much earlier. India introduced TREM later but has been steadily tightening it to bring domestic standards closer to what the rest of the world already follows.

Engine Technologies That Help Cut Emissions

Every time TREM standards get stricter, manufacturers have to redesign engines. They are required to add new components and put tractors through fresh rounds of testing and certification before selling them. This takes time, research, and money. Industry data already shows the scale of disruption. As per the times of India, when TREM IV came into force for tractors above 50 HP in 2023, sales in that segment fell sharply as buyers adjusted to costlier, more complex machines. Manufacturers are now factoring in similar shifts as TREM V rolls out across the rest of the market.

Will Tractor Prices Go Up?

This is usually the first question farmers ask, and it is a fair one. Building emission-control hardware into an engine adds to its cost, and that cost tends to be passed on to buyers. Industry estimates suggest tractors above 50 HP could see price increases in the range of 15–25% as TREM IV and TREM V requirements take full effect. While, smaller tractors moving to TREM V later may see a comparatively smaller, though still real, price bump.

There is a silver lining, though. Cleaner-burning engines are often more fuel-efficient, which can offset some of the extra upfront cost over the tractor's working life. A recent cut in GST on tractors, from 12% to 5%, is also expected to soften some of the price impact for buyers.

What Lies Ahead for Tractor Emission Norms in India

TREM V marks India's biggest shift yet, since it is the first stage designed to eventually cover every horsepower category rather than only the larger tractors. The road there is being built in phases rather than all at once. Because most tractors sold in India fall in the sub-50 HP range that ordinary farmers rely on most.

Going forward, expect the government to keep balancing two goals: pushing engines toward international emission benchmarks. Other is to make sure the transition does not price small and marginal farmers out of buying new equipment. Consultations between the government, manufacturers, and farmer bodies are likely to keep shaping the final timeline.
