India Tractor Wholesale Growth Expected to Slow to 1–4% in FY2027: ICRA

India’s domestic tractor wholesale volume growth is expected to moderate to 1–4% in FY2027, compared with 23.5% growth recorded in FY2026, according to a research note by ICRA. The expected slowdown reflects a high base effect and concerns over uneven and deficient monsoon rainfall, which could affect agricultural activity and rural demand.

In August 2026, domestic tractor wholesale volumes increased by 6.5% year-on-year. However, retail tractor registrations grew by just 0.8% year-on-year. According to ICRA, retail demand is beginning to reflect the high base after nearly 18 months of strong double-digit growth, along with emerging rainfall-related stress in some rural areas.

Monsoon Deficit Poses Risk to Tractor Demand

An uneven monsoon remains a key risk for tractor demand in FY2027. With El Niño patterns emerging, cumulative southwest monsoon rainfall stood at 85% of the Long Period Average (LPA) as of September 14, 2026.

The India Meteorological Department’s first-stage Long Range Forecast projected seasonal rainfall at 90% ± 4% of the LPA. ICRA cautioned that continued rainfall deficits could affect kharif crop production and farm incomes. This may also reduce farmers’ demand for replacement tractors and other agricultural machinery during the remaining months of FY2027.

Tractor Manufacturers’ Operating Margins Expected to Remain Resilient

Despite the expected slowdown in tractor sales growth, ICRA expects operating margins of tractor original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to remain resilient.

The agency noted that operating leverage and stable raw material procurement costs are expected to support profitability. These factors are also likely to help maintain comfortable credit profiles for major tractor manufacturers.
