What is PTO Horsepower in Tractor? – Types and Uses
Tractor plays a vital role in the agricultural sector. Most of the labour-intensive work can be done by the tractor itself. Tractor comes in different HP ranges and PTO HP. Tractor PTO HP means is tractor Power Take-Off. You previously heard about PTO in tractors, and if not this is the right place for you. Here you will find more about PTO and PTO HP of tractor in detail, its use, type, and necessary information about PTO. Here is a closer look. Read what is PTO horsepower in tractor here:
PTO stands for power take-off which connects to the tractor to power them. Several methods of taking power from the front power source and transmitting it to attached implements. This application mostly uses a drive shaft and bolted joints for transmit power to attached secondary implements. It is a mechanical gearbox that attaches to apertures provided on truck transmissions. This is a systematic means of transferring the mechanical power between farm tractors and tractor implements.
What is Power Take-Off ( PTO HP) used for :
The PTO Horsepower indicates the amount of power available to run various implements. PTO used for pulling the implements for tillage and sowing various kinds of crops and used for power stationary. Equipment for doing multi-operation such as threshing of crops, spraying, pumping water from a tube well and many more.

How is PTO horsepower calculated :
The HP of PTO is directly proportional to the output shaft RPM. Therefore the faster the turn is more the horsepower is produced. Here is the formula to determine the HP of a tractor is :
HP = Torque (T) x Rated RPM ÷ 5,252
PTOs are rated according to the torque capacity, which is the amount of force needed to make something move or run. And to calculate the speed of the PTO, here is the formula,
Equipment Speed ÷ Engine Speed = PTO Speed.

Tractor PTO types in India :
Here is the quick look at the type of PTO which are available in India.
1. Transmission PTO Shaft :
Transmission PTO is the simplest and the oldest PTO shaft type which is available in India. This is directly connected to the transmission. It gains PTO on the tractor when you press the clutch.
Two-Stage Clutch (Live) :
This comes with two transmission clutch stages; If you depress the clutch halfway, the first stage permits you to use a PTO shaft. The second stage allows for commanding the PTO’s association. It disconnects the transmission and PTO operation.

2. Independent PTO :
Independent PTO shaft is best for the tractor. It is equipped with its clutch and controlled distinctly from the tractor’s transmission. It’s further divided into two type
- Mechanical
- Hydraulic

3. Economy PTO :
It permits the tractor to run at the lower rpm of 540 but lower the engine RPM than the standard. This helps to save fuel, decrease vibration, and lessen noise. It is the best for many implements that include baling, mowing, and tilling. The tractor should run at the standard of 540 modes.

4. Reverse PTO :
Reverse PTO in the tractor used to turn the tractor in the reverse direction using the button. It is used when farm equipment gets stuck and performing farm activities.
How much PTO Horsepower is enough for a tractor :
The less is more is the rule for in case of a tractor. If you think that 20 HP is enough for your tractor, then it’s always better to buy a slightly more powerful tractor. It would be best if you go with the one which is enough for your daily work usage since it requires less maintenance in the long term.

What is the difference between 540 and 1000 PTO :
- The 7R Series Tractors offers a two-speed option with the ability to manually shift the PTO speeds. The lever on the rear of the tractor in addition to inverting the PTO shaft while changing between 540 and 1000 PTO.
- The 540- RPM and 1000-RPM speeds allow for standard PTO operations, for higher power requirements within the constant power range. This option is well suited for the operators who have a wide range of PTO implements, PTO horsepower requirements and varying PTO shaft sizes in their operations.
- Use the 35-mm (1-3/8-in.) 1000-RPM PTO shaft on implements requiring less than 150 PTO HP, such as manure spreaders and rotary cutters.
Use the 35-mm (1-3/8-in.) 540-RPM PTO shaft on implements requiring less than 75 PTO HP (light loads only), such as auger applications.

Do all tractors have PTO :
Most of the tractors have a Power Take Off shaft, which connects to your implements to power them. The shaft draws power from the engine, indicating how much power is available to run various implements. High PTO is also critical when you start talking about the terrain.
Why is the PTO dangerous :
Sometimes Serious injury occurred when shafts have become separated while the tractors PTO was engaged. The machine’s IID shaft is a telescoping shaft whose one part will slide into a second part. Separation of the driveline shaft is not a commonly occurring event. It most commonly happens when three-point hitch equipment is improperly mounted. Sometimes when the hitch between the tractor and attached machine breaks or accidentally uncouples.
