There are many varieties of turmeric, each with varying curcumin content, flavour, and aroma. Some popular ones include Lakadong, Rajendra Sonali, IISR Pragati, and Alleppey finger turmeric.
Turmeric grows on various soils but thrives in well-drained sandy or clay loam. Keep the soil moist from spring to fall, and use liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
Turmeric land is readied after early rains. Soil is plowed deeply four times for fine texture. Apply 500-1000 kg/ha of hydrated lime for laterite soils, based on pH, then plow.
Turmeric can be planted from April to July after pre-monsoon showers. Mulching beds with green leaves is vital for this crop, especially when planting on raised beds.
For turmeric, use a soil mix rich in organic matter and quality compost. Feed regularly throughout the season with options like worm castings, organic liquid fertilizer, or compost tea.
Turmeric crops are usually harvested from January to March. Early varieties mature in 7-8 months, medium in 8-9, and late after 9. When mature, leaves dry and turn light brown to yellowish.
