Many states in India produce onions on a large scale. However, the major onion producing states are Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
Maharashtra is a popular onion production state. Aurangabad, Pune, Ahmednagar, Solapur, and Nashik are the regions in Maharashtra which produce the most onions.
This Indian state contributes to 90 percent of the total onion production of the country. Its average production of onion is 37,21,610 Metric tons from 1,02,900 hectares of land.
Gujarat produces different types of onions, including red, white, and yellow onions. Also, Banaskantha, Mehsana, Junagadh and Rajkot are popular for onion cultivation.
The onion production of Rajasthan was registered at 16,850.000 kg yield from one hectare of land, leading to higher profits for farmers.
In the crop of 2022-23, the area for onion farming is estimated to be 1.91 million hectares. As a result, this state cultivates a significant quantity of onions annually.
