Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced two major initiatives in agriculture during a Krishi programme at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi. The schemes, “PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana” and “Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses”, have a combined outlay of over ₹35,000 crore.
The PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana is allocated ₹24,000 crore. It aims to enhance agricultural productivity, promote crop diversification, support sustainable farming, improve irrigation facilities, and provide credit in 100 selected districts.
Meanwhile, the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses has an allocation of ₹11,440 crore. The scheme focuses on improving pulse productivity, expanding cultivation areas, strengthening the value chain in procurement, storage, and processing, and reducing post-harvest losses.
During the event, the Prime Minister also inaugurated projects worth over ₹5,450 crore in agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and food processing sectors. In addition, he laid the foundation stone for projects valued at around ₹815 crore. These initiatives aim to strengthen the agricultural and allied sectors.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said, “The schemes, 'PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana' and 'Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses' will transform the fortunes of millions of farmers in the country. For 21st-century India to achieve rapid development, reforms in the agricultural system are essential, and this process began in 2014.”
Mr Modi also pointed out the government’s progress over the past eleven years and said, “India’s agricultural exports have nearly doubled, food grain production has grown by about 90 million metric tonnes, and fruit and vegetable output has increased by more than 640 lakh metric tonnes. Today, India leads the world in milk production and ranks second in fish production.”
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan added that the government has reduced GST rates on farm equipment and increased the MSP of Rabi crops. Through the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, ₹3.9 lakh crore has been directly transferred to farmers’ accounts. Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, ₹1.83 lakh crore has been credited to farmers to protect their income.
PM Modi asked farmers to grow crops beyond wheat and rice and focus on pulses to provide more protein. He said the success of the Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana relies on proper implementation at the local level, especially in 100 low-performing farming districts.
